Eugene O’Neill famously said\, “The one thing that explains more than anything about me is the fact that I’m Irish.” Ireland early recognized O’Neill’s genius with celebrated productions of his plays. \nWhy in New Ross? James O’Neill\, Eugene’s father\, lived with his parents and seven siblings in nearby Tinneranny. In 1847\, in the wake of the potato famine\, the O’Neills emigrated from the Port of New Ross. James\, then five years old\, later became one of the most famous actors in America. The festival honors not only Eugene O’Neill but also James\, a favorite son of New Ross.

Like the playwright himself\, they long to find a sense of belonging. Often these characters\, after reflection\, choose retreat. They choose to escape a painful existence by disengaging from the world around them. But one of O’Neill’s desperate misfits takes a different tack. Robert “Yank” Smith in The Hairy Ape finds himself equally out of place and in pain\, but instead of manufacturing a private refuge\, he barrels headfirst into the world around him seeking to prove how he fits\, not how to escape the world. Driven by an unmatched desire to find where he belongs\, Yank is Eugene O’Neill’s ultimate seeker. \n\n\nIn The Hairy Ape\, Yank is the master of all he surveys until an encounter with a mysterious woman in white turns his world upside down. The experience sends him on a quest to find her and ultimately find where he belongs. Eugene O’Neill’s 1922 theatrical fantasy will be brought to life by a dynamic ensemble of six actors in a highly imaginative production of this O’Neill classic. \n\nRead/download our The Hairy Ape Engagement Guide by Dramaturg Beth Wynstra here \nCheck out The Hairy Ape program here

SUMMARY:O'Neill Festival 2024: "Sweeping Passions" Featuring "Mourning Becomes Electra"
DESCRIPTION:Please note the new start time of 5pm for Sat. 28 and Sun. 29 performances \n\nWhat you should know before you buy. WATCH\n\n\n\nThere are two transitions where the audience will move between locations.\nLight bites are included\, but consider having a late lunch as the play run is 3 hours.\n\nDon’t forget\, leave no trace and place food/trash in proper bins.\n\n\n\n  \nTao House will get caught up in Sweeping Passions this fall. The Eugene O’Neill Festival 2024 will be centered around one of the playwright’s most dramatic and adventurous creations\, Mourning Becomes Electra. O’Neill’s great American take on Greek tragedy is an action-packed epic featuring all the hallmarks of a captivating soap opera: jealousy\, adultery\, revenge\, murder\, incest\, suicide\, and more murder! All the things that are horrible to experience in real life but horribly entertaining when watching fictious characters. \nThe trilogy of one-act plays that make up Mourning Becomes Electra also highlights O’Neill’s trademark insight into the desires and struggles of the human condition as well as a haunting musical score. The setting for the play is the exterior and interior of the temple-like Mannon house. September’s production will be performed in the courtyard in front of Tao House as well as in the Old Barn theatre a short walk away. \nThis site-specific Mourning Becomes Electra at Tao House promises to be a compelling one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed. Please read our cancellation policies here. \nLook to encounter Sweeping Passions through other Festival events here. \n  \n \nDirected by Eric Fraisher Hayes \n  \nSat. SUMMARY:Vows\, Veils\, and Masks; meet the Author\, Beth Wynstra
DESCRIPTION:Beth Wynstra\, Associate Professor of English at Babson College\, author\, and dramaturg\, will be hosting a book launch for her new book; \n\nVows\, Veils\, and Masks: The Performance of Marriage in the Plays of Eugene O’Neill\n\n\n(University of Iowa Press\, 2023)\n\n\n\n\n\nBabson College’s Beth Wynstra has been an invaluable resource as dramaturg for our recent productions of Beyond the Horizon\, Welded\, and The First Man. We are excited to have the Boston-area academic and author join us in person for the kick-off to our 2023 Eugene O’Neill Festival. Guests will receive complimentary bubbly beverage choices\, a Liberty Tea tasting\, a party favor\, and raffle chance. Additionally\, guests can meet an Isadora Duncan dance historian and ponder a curated “Vows & Veils” display of vintage 1910-40 women’s periodicals plus antique hope chest and bridal artifacts. \nAuburn Lounge (map it) \nWed Aug 2 5:00 – 6:30 pm \nTickets $20 HERE or $25 at the door \nPurchase Beth’s book HERE \n\n  \nVows\, Veils\, and Masks offers a bold and timely approach to the plays of Eugene O’Neill with its attention to the engagements\, weddings\, and marriages so crucial to the tragic action in O’Neill’s works. Specifically\, the book examines the culturally sanctioned traditions and gender roles that underscored marital life in the early twentieth century\, and that still haunt and define love and partnership in the modern age. \nWeaving in artifacts like advice columns\, advertisements\, theatrical reviews\, and even the lived experiences of the actors who brought O’Neill’s wife characters to life\, Beth Wynstra points to new ways of seeing and empathizing with those who are betrothed and new possibilities for reading marriage in literary and dramatic works. She suggests that the various ways women were\, and still are\, expected to divert from their true ambitions\, desires\, and selves in the service of appropriate wifely behavior is a detrimental performance and one at the crux of O’Neill’s marital tragedies. This book invites more inclusive and nuanced ways of thinking about the choices married characters must make and the roles they play\, both on and off the stage. \n  \nReviews: \n“Due to her fresh approach to womanhood in O’Neill’s plays\, Wynstra contributes to the rejuvenation of the studies on the playwright. She convincingly makes her case against the restrictive labeling of female/male behaviors in O’Neill’s pieces and deconstructs an analytical trend\, which tends to disregard the cultural patterns that underpinned marital life.”—Emeline Jouve\, author\, Unspeakable Acts: Murder by Women \n“Wynstra argues persuasively against common notions of women/wives as ‘villains’ in many of O’Neill’s plays\, and provides a cultural context that defines them more sympathetically. Her book offers a timely and compelling contribution to O’Neill studies and American theatre history. Its contemporary cultural relevance on gender-based social issues extends its appeal to an even broader audience.”—Steven F. Bloom\, author\, Student Companion to Eugene O’Neill \n
