This 1922 Pulitzer Prize-winning play will be presented for three weekends at Tao House\, O’Neill’s home in the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site in Danville. The play portrays a woman who fights for self-determination against the expectations of society and the men in her life. When Anna memorably enters Johnny-the-Priest’s New York waterfront saloon\, she’s looking to reconnect with her barge-captain father after surviving a childhood of abandonment and trauma and after supporting herself as a sex worker. As she joins her father at sea to heal\, she finds family\, love\, and a renewed sense of purpose to live on her terms\, declaring\, “Nobody owns me\, see?—’cepting myself.”

SUMMARY:"Warnings Before Breakfast" Online Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 14 6:00 pm PST/9:00 pm EST \nEric Fraisher Hayes will have a FREE online discussion with WBB dramaturgs Beth Wynstra and Zander Brietzke about the plays Warnings and Before Breakfast and the process of adapting them for January. Join the discussion on Dec. 14 using this Zoom LINK. \nRegister here: \n\n  \nTwo early Eugene O’Neill plays will have a new life this January. Warnings (1913) is the story of a ship’s wireless operator losing his hearing who must make dire decisions about continuing a job he is no longer qualified to do and supporting his family. Before Breakfast (1916) is essentially a monologue from the perspective of a beleaguered wife who desperately craves the attention of her husband in the other room. \n“It dawned on me that each of these plays was very centered on one character’s point of view\, and in each case\, I was left wondering about the other half of the story\,” says EONF Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes. “What if I could intermix the two plays to understand these stories more fully? Maybe seeing the two plays as one could shed light on the relationships in these stories and relationships in general.” \nWarnings and Before Breakfast will become Warnings Before Breakfast this January at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley. One of EONF’s specialties is producing rarely-seen O’Neill one-acts\, but this production will be a completely novel and exciting experiment in storytelling not to be missed. Zander Brietzke and Beth Wynstra are dramaturgs on this project. \n  \nWarnings Before Breakfast \nby Eugene O’Neill (Adapted by Eric Fraisher Hayes) \nMuseum of the San Ramon Valley\, 205 Railroad Ave\, Danville\, CA 94526 \nFriday\, January 12  8:00pm \nSaturday\, January 13  8:00pm (followed by a post-show discussion led by Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes) \nSunday\, January 14  2:00pm (followed by a post-show discussion led by Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes) \nTickets $25 \nThis script-in-hand performance will run for 75 mins\, with no intermission. \n

SUMMARY:O'Neill Festival 2024: "Sweeping Passions" Featuring "Mourning Becomes Electra"
DESCRIPTION:Please note the new start time of 5pm for Sat. 28 and Sun. 29 performances \n\nWhat you should know before you buy. WATCH\n\n\n\nThere are two transitions where the audience will move between locations.\nLight bites are included\, but consider having a late lunch as the play run is 3 hours.\n\nDon’t forget\, leave no trace and place food/trash in proper bins.\n\n\n\n  \nTao House will get caught up in Sweeping Passions this fall. The Eugene O’Neill Festival 2024 will be centered around one of the playwright’s most dramatic and adventurous creations\, Mourning Becomes Electra. O’Neill’s great American take on Greek tragedy is an action-packed epic featuring all the hallmarks of a captivating soap opera: jealousy\, adultery\, revenge\, murder\, incest\, suicide\, and more murder! All the things that are horrible to experience in real life but horribly entertaining when watching fictious characters. \nThe trilogy of one-act plays that make up Mourning Becomes Electra also highlights O’Neill’s trademark insight into the desires and struggles of the human condition as well as a haunting musical score. The setting for the play is the exterior and interior of the temple-like Mannon house. September’s production will be performed in the courtyard in front of Tao House as well as in the Old Barn theatre a short walk away. \nThis site-specific Mourning Becomes Electra at Tao House promises to be a compelling one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed. Please read our cancellation policies here. \nLook to encounter Sweeping Passions through other Festival events here. \n  \n \nDirected by Eric Fraisher Hayes \n  \nSat. SUMMARY:O'Neill's "A Wife for a Life: A Backstage Story" and "Hughie"
DESCRIPTION:O’Neill’s First Act and Last Act\nJanuary at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley offers an opportunity to compare Eugene O’Neill’s very first one-act play with his very last. Further heightening the contrast will be the fact that his last one-act (Hughie) will be presented traditionally as written while his very first attempt to write a play\, the one-act A Wife for a Life\, has been radically reimagined to include the relationship between Eugene and his father\, the famous actor James O’Neill. \n  \nA Wife for a Life: A Backstage Story\nBy Eugene O’Neill \nAdapted and directed by Eric Fraisher Hayes \nIn 1913 an aspiring young playwright (Eugene O’Neill) brings his first play script to the dressing room of his famous father (James O’Neill) in the hope of getting his father to play the lead role. A Wife for a Life: A Backstage Story imagines a dressing room argument over the nature of life and art between the famous actor father and the soon-to-be famous playwright son. The young man’s script becomes the battleground for this clash over the value of theatre and the human need for truth and illusion. \nThis love letter to theatre premiered in New Ross\, Ireland in October 2024. January will be the U.S. premiere.\n  \nHughie\nBy Eugene O’Neill \nDirected by Cynthia Lagodzinski \nLate one night\, a Broadway sport\, gambler\, and man-about-town named Erie Smith wanders back to the shabby hotel where he has a room. He has been on a drunk ever since the death of his only “friend” in the world\, the former night clerk of the hotel\, Hughie. Terrified of the isolation of his room and the visions that keep coming to him\, he decides to strike up a conversation with the new night clerk. What ensues is a quest to find some comfort in the company of others. To find a way to make it through the night. \n  \n  \nEugene O’Neill First and Last Act \nA Wife for a Life: A Backstage Story and Hughie \nMuseum of the San Ramon Valley \nFri.\, Jan. 10\, 7:30pm SOLD OUT \nSat.\, Jan. 11\, 7:30pm (plus post-performance discussion) SOLD OUT \nSun..
