Two early Eugene O’Neill plays will have a new life this January. Warnings (1913) is the story of a ship’s wireless operator losing his hearing who must make dire decisions about continuing a job he is no longer qualified to do and supporting his family. Before Breakfast (1916) is essentially a monologue from the perspective of a beleaguered wife who desperately craves the attention of her husband in the other room.

“It dawned on me that each of these plays was very centered on one character’s point of view, and in each case, I was left wondering about the other half of the story,” says EONF Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes. “What if I could intermix the two plays to understand these stories more fully? Maybe seeing the two plays as one could shed light on the relationships in these stories and relationships in general.”

Warnings and Before Breakfast will become Warnings Before Breakfast this January at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley. One of EONF’s specialties is producing rarely-seen O’Neill one-acts, but this production will be a completely novel and exciting experiment in storytelling not to be missed. Zander Brietzke and Beth Wynstra are dramaturgs on this project.
